Malaysia maintains its position as the largest palm oil exporter to Japan, accounting for 58.6% of market share in 2018.
In 2018, Japan produced about 1.85 million MT of oils and fats. Rapeseed oil being the most produced oils in the Japan. From 2014 to 2018, Japan produced in average about 1.06 million MT of rapeseed oil followed by soybean oil at 441,540 MT. These two oils combined accounted for 1.49 million MT or 80.7% of the total oils and fats production in 2018.
Oils and fats imports in Japan is mainly for domestic usage. The major imported oil is palm oil. Japan will continue to rely on imports of oils and fats as production growth has not grown in tandem with consumption growth.
