KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 -- The Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry says it is ready to provide technical advice through the Malaysian Rubber Board (LGM) to MARDEC Processing Sdn Bhd to identify the problems that have brought losses in the latter’s factory operations.

Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali said in a statement today the plant needs to improve its competitiveness to enable it to continue to process rubber produced not just in Hulu Terengganu district but also statewide.
He noted that a proposal to close the plant in Kuala Berang, which can process some 2,000 tonnes of rubber a month, would affect not just the rubber production and livelihoods of local rubber smallholders but also result in over 110 factory workers losing their jobs.
LGM’s records show there are 2,700 smallholders in the district, and closing the plant would also indirectly affect the state’s 19,350 smallholders.
