PASIR GUDANG: Locals are urged to take up jobs in the oil palm sector to reduce the current shortage of labour.
Deputy Primary Industries and Commodities minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng said the problem was caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
He said the ministry would work with the relevant authorities to promote jobs available in the oil palm industry among Malaysians, especially those who had lost their employment elsewhere earlier.

“Foreign workers working in the oil palm sector who went back home are not allowed to re-enter Malaysia due to travel restrictions following the pandemic.
“This has caused labour shortage and most industry players are dependent on foreign workers,” he said during a visit to a palm oil factory here.
Wee said while the labour-intensive oil palm sector did not typically attract Malaysian workers, he believed the situation had now changed as many were unemployed due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
“As such, locals should consider this sector. They can take on the jobs either as a short or long-term measure.
Also present during the visit was Malaysian Palm Oil Board director-general Dr Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir. — By VENESA DEVI
