PAPAR, June 30 -- The proposal paper to form a consultative council consisting of timber industry players, the government and related agencies will be presented to the state cabinet soon.
Sabah Deputy Chief Minister who is also state Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said the consultative council would serve as a platform to hear and discuss issues faced by the wood-based industry sector.
“The council will comprise the Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA), Timber Association of Sabah (TAS), the Forestry Department, Yayasan Sabah and other related agencies.

“If the proposal is approved by the cabinet, the council is expected to help resolve issues such as the supply of raw materials as well as ensuring sustainability of the timber industry in the state,” he said after visiting NWP wood products factory and Lamitech International Sdn Bhd here today.
Madius said the timber industry is one of the sectors that has been allowed to resume operations after the Movement Control Order was lifted.
“This sector is seen as among good economic generators for Sabah through domestic sales and exports to countries such as Japan, Taiwan, China and Singapore,” he said.
